12th Sunday of Ordinary Time, The Cost of Discipleship, June 21, 2026

Gospel: Matthew 10:26-33
26 “So do not fear them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 27 What I tell you in the darkness, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered in your ear, proclaim on the housetops. 28 And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in [a]hell. 29 Are two sparrows not sold for an [b]assarion? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30 But even the hairs of your head are all counted. 31 So do not fear; you are more valuable than a great number of sparrows.
32 “Therefore, everyone who [c]confesses Me before people, I will also confess [d]him before My Father who is in heaven. 33 But whoever denies Me before people, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven.
Gospel Commentary:
As Jesus gathers his twelve disciples to send them out on their very first mission alone, the mood is heavy and real. He doesn’t promise them quick success or easy comfort. Instead, he warns them plainly that they will face danger, cruel rumors, and arrest.
God Will Protect His Disciples
Jesus prepares his followers for danger by showing them that human power has a limit. He knows they will face physical threats, but he tells them to be fearless because of a much bigger reality:
“And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matthew 10:28)
How Much God Cares for His Disciples
To help this fearlessness sink into their hearts, Jesus points to something common and cheap from everyday life—the sparrows sold in the dusty marketplace:
“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.” (Matthew 10:29-31)
Through this simple picture, Jesus shows a beautiful truth: God notices the tiniest details. If the Creator of the universe watches over the life and death of a cheap, half-penny bird, He will certainly not look away when His own messengers suffer. Jesus doesn’t promise that bad things will never happen to them. Instead, He promises that they can never fall out of God’s hands. Even the hairs on their heads are counted by a Father who knows them inside out, proving that their sacrifices are deeply valued and never forgotten.
Discipleship Means Taking Risks
Finally, Jesus talks about the real cost of following him. Faith cannot be a private, hidden secret kept safe from conflict. It requires standing up and being counted, knowing that our choices on earth have eternal results:
“So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 10:32-33)
Reflection Questions
For Personal Reflection
- Where is fear holding back your faith?
Jesus tells us not to fear people who can only hurt our feelings or our social standing. In your daily life—at work, online, or with friends—are there times you hide your faith just to stay comfortable, safe, or liked by others?
For Basic Ecclesial Communities (BEC)
- How does our community show people that they are worth “more than many sparrows”?
In a world where people are often treated as useful only if they have money or power, how can our small church community practically show God’s deep love for the poor and lonely? How can we better support neighbors who are going through hard times and feel forgotten?
